Google is starting to open up access to its generative AI in search. New Search Labs features are coming too.
Google's vision of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search is just beginning to arrive. The Mountain View company has said that it is granting American users access to Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) and other Search laboratories. If you haven't already, just sign up for the waiting list and wait to receive an invitation email.
Google begins to open access to its generative AI in search.
Revealed during Google I/O 2023 a few weeks ago, Google SGE represents the company's use of conversational AI in the classic search experience. If you've used Bing AI before, expect something familiar, albeit different. Cherlynn Low pointed out in Engadget's SGE test that Google's AI search uses the same text prompts you're used to rather than going through a separate chatbot like in Bing. Then, a separate area underneath the search box (and the sponsored results), but above the regular results, displays the generative AI results.. At the top right of the results proposed by the AI, a button allows you to expand the insert. This just adds maps showing the source articles. Finally, you can ask questions to go further via a button under the results.
Google describes this as “important information to consider, with links for further reading”. See it as a part of Bard injected directly into the Google search that you already know so well.
New Search Labs features are coming too.
In addition, Google also opens access to other Search Labs features, including Code Tips and Add to Sheets (only for the United States). Code Tips "uses the power of large language models to provide suggestions for writing code faster and smarter."Developers can ask questions regarding a variety of technologies (Docker, Git, shell), programming languages (C, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Python, and TypeScript), and algorithms. The Add to Sheets feature in the Google Sheets app lets you add search results straight into a spreadsheet. Tapping the Sheets icon to the left of a search result brings up a list of your recent documents; it is then enough to choose one to attach the result to it.
If you're not on the Search Labs waitlist, you can click the Labs icon (beaker-shaped) in a new Chrome desktop tab or in the Google Search app on Android or iOS. The Mountain View firm, however, has not specified when it intends to expand access to these features, so you will have to be patient.
